Xperia Arc Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Problems

Does anyone have problems getting the portable Wi-Fi Hot Spot to work?

I have just updated my phone to v2.3.3 firmware and still not working.

Build number : 3.0.1.A.0.145

Model : LT15a

I created the Wi-Fi hotspot and successfully connected my notebook to the hot spot but not able to access the internet from the notebook browser.

Checked all the browsers settings, eg. proxy settings to no proxy, firewall settings on my notebook, etc, etc

Just called the Sony Ericsson support number and the support person on the phone.

He informed me that he has tested the portable Wi-Fi hot spot for the Xperia PLAY but not yet for the Xperia Arc

He will do a test on his side and give me a call back.

.

Not sure when though. If he does call back, I will provide an update about this.

Thank you

Hi Jake,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I initially had the APN settings as you suggested below.

I copied the settings from the Xperia X10a.

As stated above, I then requested an auto config from Telstra over the air.

Anyway, as you suggested, I have changed the Internet APN settings as you suggested below.

It still does not work.

Have you heard anything back from the technical support team?

Thank you

Still in the process, Can you clarify say if you where to use USB Tether does this work with the telstra.iph settings or is it only when creating a Wifi Hotspot the issue occurs.

The USB tethering problem I have is as below.

I performed the steps below to use the native USB tether function on the phone.

1. Connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer

2. Connect the micro-USB connector to the phone.

3. Go into the Tethering & portable hotspot setting and enable the USB tethering mode.

4. Phone says Tethered.

5. Computer network status icon says connected to the phone.

6. Launch the internet browser to surf the internet but get the error message of can't find the page, unable to access the web page.

Note : I also noticed the similar behaviour of the 3G/HSDPA symbol that is next to the signal strength bars dissapear when I enable the USB tether.

Disable the USB tether and the 3G/HSDPA symbol comes back.

To get around the USB tether problem, I used an app I downloaded from the Android Market.

Now you got me thinking. May be there an app available in the Android market for enabling the portable wi-fi hotspot in the mean time while the technical support team is analysing the problem.

I might do a search.

Forget to answer your other part of the question.

The native in built USB tethering function does not work with the telstra.iph APN settings you mentioned earlier.

The phone does not allow you to enable able USB tether and the portable wi-fi hotspot at the same time. This is correct as they are used for different purposes.

you could try to use PDANet

and see if you have the same problems

Thank you for the suggestion.

I am using PDA Net as the workaround for the USB tethering problem.

In fact I've been using it for the Xperia X10a which is still on Android OS 2.1 which does not have tethering support.

Yes the problems and issues we had to endure with the X10.:smileyhappy:

Seems to be better now.

SE announced through their blog that they will be releasing the Gingerbread OS for the X10 in August.

Won't have DLNA support but that is not important to me as the X10 is one of my spare phones so will update the firmware when it is released.

Hi we have had an update from our team in Australia,although not officially released on the telstra network one of the team has been using their Arc via Telstra (and the wifi hotspot function) for quite some time and has confirmed the settings supplied by Jake as being correct. From this position the next stage would be to remove any potential conflicts with other apps, or possible data corruption by doing a factory reset (or Software update/repair if not completed already) and attempt testing again using the below settings.

Oh and it is a really simple question but you are certain you have an LT15 (A) variant of the ARC?

In the interim I will forward the outcome of the above back to the team and see if they have any additional support options...

To confirm the settings are

Name = Telstra Internet

APN = telstra.iph

Proxy =

Port =

Username =

Password =

Server =

MMSC =

MMS proxy =

MMS port =

MCC = 505

MNC = 01

Authentication type =

APN type = default,supl

Thank you Craig.

I have definitely a LT15 (A) model. It is stated on the box and also in the settings under About phone.

I have recently updated the firmware to the latest version of 2.3.3 from 2.3.2.

The first thing I tested after the update was the USB tethering and portable wi-fi hotspot.

Even in v2.3.2, the tethering and portable wi-fi hotspot function was not working fresh out of the box.

I waited patiently for the 2.3.3 version as there was talk that v2.3.3 fixes some wi-fi problems.

The APN settings you mentioned were exactly the ones I used originally(Copied from the previous phone I was using ie the Xperia X10a)

Anyway, I have reverted back to what you have suggested above and re did the testing.

Still does not work. Hmmm:smileysad:

Everything else on the phone as far as I know works except the USB tethering and the portable Wi-Fi hotspot function.
