you should backup everything and then use Update Service to get 2.1 on your X8 (make sure you backup EVERYTHING)

http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/mobilephones/downloads/subject/updateservice/1.808661?cc=gb&...

also try this

settings -> applications -> manage applications -> market -> uninstall updates

here are some alternatives to backup everything

Sync your contacts with Google

open your phonebook

press MENU button -> tap on Send Contacts -> select all -> send it to your email

on your computer
-> download the file -> go to your gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import
For SMS/MMS

Install "backup SMS" to back up your SMS and MMS to your Gmail

or your SMS use

"backup & restore SMS"

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result

or for your MMS use "Save MMS"

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.schwimmer.android.mmsextract&feature=search_result

if you dont want to lose your call logs

Don't worry so much about backing up your apps

on your computer go to

market.android.com -> log in -> click on My Library -> and send all your apps to your phone

Do your other data based functions (ie: internet browsing) work without error?

On the assumption, you have successfully connected your phone to your wi-fi network and it does not block your phone from accessing the internet, there are two things you can check.

Not sure if you have done so already.

1. Background data option must be enabled.

Go to the Settings Menu and select Accounts and sync. Tick the box to enable.

2. You will need an e-mail account before you can use the Android Market on your phone.

In the same sub menu, in the Managed accounts section below, do you have any Gmail e-mail accounts set up?

yes , i have enabled the backround data options.  if i open the android market page i'm not getting nothing. i cant get the sign up page. ( thanks for your reply)
