My pass through keeps cutting out?!

Hi guys.

 

OK so i have spent agesssss sorting this out.

 

 

I have just purchased the XH90 and connected it to my AV, Yamaha HTR-2071, both work with eArc.

I then connect my pc to the AV.

 

So i try to play sound from my computer and now i have to have my TV on. so I set the passthrough to auto, and that allows me to turn the TV  off whilst I am on the computer and still receive sound.  However the problem is, after about 20 mins the PC monitor starts flashes black and then the sound cuts out for a second or two.  This will be followed by the same thing happening every 20-30 seconds.

 

settings are:

AV:

HDMI Control - On

Standby Sync - off

 

TV:

Settings:

Audio System prioritisation - off

AV Sync - Auto

eArch mode - Auto

Digital audio out - Auto 1

Dolby Digital Plus output - dolby digital plus

Passthrough mode - Auto

 

 

I have tried to turn on Bravia Sync Control however it says : 'not available while bravia sync compatible audio system is used'.

 

 

I have followed these rules: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00126149

 

However, where it says 'On the TV, press HOME, then select  ► [External Inputs] ► [HDMI Set-up] ► [Control for HDMI] ► [On].'  My TV does not have the 'HDMI Set-up' link.

 

 

 

If anyone can tell me why the passthrough cuts out it would be great thanks.

Hi,

 

Unfortunately this is a typical behaviour of Sony Android TVs.
Since Google is checking for updates in regular intervals the the TV also enables the HDMI and USB ports.

This leads to a handshake with the connected devices.

 

This can only be avoided by unplugging the TV from mains.

Wow well that seems useless.

 

all I want to do is have sound from my pc to the AV, why should I have to have a TV on whenever my computer is on 🙄

 

I don’t have this problem when the tv isn’t in standby

You are sending video to the Yammy (via HDMI I assume) which thinks you want to play it on the TV, and so obediently tries to do this.

 

Can you use optical instead, either direct from the PC or via an HDMI to optical converter?

 

Or sound from the PC headphones out, though that may not be so good?

 

Or just pull the HDMI to the TV, when using the PC?

Yeah the PC to AV is sending a video signal, and the tv is showing it as audio and video.  That’s why I tried to set up pass through mode to allow the tv to be turned off and the audio signal just to come through.

 

I wanted to use HDMI to AV from the pc because I thought it had better quality surround sound compared to digital?  

 

 

So I have tried the digital cable instead of hdmi and the same problem still occurs.

 

 

it now goes TV - HDMI - AV - SPDIFF - PC

 

It still seems to cut out and lose signal whilst the tv is in standby  after 10 mins and then it happens every 20-30 seconds.

I see you setting passthrough on the TV, but not on the AV amp, which probably hasn’t got passthrough.

 

Thing is, what do you reckon passthrough is doing? Because I think it applies to HDMI 2.1 devices that would be limited to 2.0 if you plugged them into the AV, but which, if you plug them into the TV, can give you all the 2.1 video goodness, plus providing audio which, even though the TV can’t handle it itself, it can pass through uncompressed and unchanged to send to the AV via the eARC cable, where the AV can do full justice to it.

 

If I’m correct, setting passthrough, or not setting it, is irrelevant to your problem.

 

I do now very much suggest that as an experiment you disconnect the HDMI cable to the TV, try running the AV amp like that with the PC, and see whether this resolves the issue or not.

 

My working hypothesis at the moment is that the TV may be innocent; but I could very well be wrong, still.

After taking a look at the Yamaha Manual, it seems that it's always recommended to connect both HDMI and Digital Optical simultaneously for external devices. This leads me to believe the Receiver better manages audio playback over Optical, and video via HDMI.

 

There's also a setting called SCENE Link. Try to disable it.

 

I'm not sure why the amp is even sending signal to the TV when you're playing content from a completely different input. This doesn't sound like it's related to the TV IMO. The signal here is managed by the AV receiver, which is one of its main functions, isn't it?

You can, but I’m pretty sure this won’t make any difference.

The amp is sending the signal to the TV because it is being fed from an HDMI input. If you think about it, this is what you would normally want it to do.

 

I do not know what other provisions the PC has for high quality audio output, if any, but if it does, feeding this signal to an audio input on the amp will result in it not attempting video output.


The amp seems to have no provision for disabling video from an HDMI input.

 

The straightforward test I have suggested is to disable video by disconnecting the HDMI cable to the TV, and seeing if the sound from the PC now behaves.

 

I think it still might not; this will tell us if the TV is causing it or not, though.
