Will Xperia XZ2 Compact receive any more updates or Android 11?

The last (security) update for the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, 52.1.A.3.49, is more than 3 months old. The Android security patch level is from July 1.

Will this phone receive any new (security) updates?

Will it receive an upgrade to Android 11?

hello @sicco1

as for the security updates and major updates usually they will be supported up to 2 years. that is not a guarantee though. factors such as hardware and user experience might affect the device being updated. and unfortunately XZ2 Compact might not receive Android 11

@MarlonUk1thanks for your reply and the link!

It would be nice if Sony made it more clear which devices are still supported. They simply have to make a page to show this, just like Samsung does. They already have this information internally, so just share it with the customers already.

It would be a real shame if Sony gave a flagship model like the XZ2 Compact only 2 years of security updates. Also just 2 Android version upgrades is becoming less common with other manufacturers. I chose Sony because they had a reputation of timely and many updates, but it seems that other manufacturers are doing much better nowadays. You'd expect that with Project Treble it is much easier for Sony to provide these updates for a longer period of time.

But most updates are made by Google

I mean they're mainly made by Google, then manufacturers and network operators, test the release on their products and adjust accordingly, then enroll it to the public, but if the update is too advanced for certain devices, it won't be out cause it wouldn't work perfectly with the older Operating Systems, which I guess what makes it more difficult to predict the amount of releases any model could have.

I don't agree. Samsung is able to communicate quite clearly which devices they currently support. Sony could easily do this as well.

Regarding the amount of years that manufacturers provide updates. This is not a technical problem but a money problem. Security patches can be backported to earlier versions of Android and flagship devices released in the past 3-4 years are definitely capable of running the latest Android versions for the next couple of years.

I'd happily pay a monthly fee to get support for new (security) versions and if such a subscription was well marketed there would be enough people paying to support a few developers to do this. But the manufacturers most likely make more money if they sell new phones every 2 years.

You make a fair point, every policy is about making and preserving the cash flow, on both benefiting ends, consumer and provider. Every last one of us help in making this industrial tech age, as we always prefer having the latest there is!
