It is true that NFC can be switched off, but for some reason there's no way to remove just the symbol from the status bar (while keeping NFC on). XZ firmware has "System Icons" entry under "Settings > Display", which allows one to hide/show [almost] every system icon in the status bar. But for some unexplainable reason NFC icon is missing from the list.
This feature appeares to be a copy of similar Android feature available through hidden "System UI tuner". And "System UI tuner" does not have an entry for NFC icon either. Apparently, this is Android issue, not XZ issue.
