sound issues with FS415S

Hi I need some help, I am having problems with my sound.
My laptop is almost 4 years old and recently the sound started warping, so it's still playing sound, but not clearly.
I've updated my driver for my Realtek HD Audio Output and checked I have all the up to date drivers for other sound stuff.
It doesn't matter if I listen through the laptop speakers or headphones it does the same thing.
It happens with all programs, not one specifically.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this issue could be and how I can resolve it....or am I doomed to a laptop without sound?

Hi vonmitz and welcome.

The problem you describe could be either hardware or software related.

Can you please provide a few more details:

Are you running XP or Vista?
Did this happen suddenly or has it become gradually worse?
Is sound ok at boot – i.e. when the Vaio logo appears and at the Windows welcome screen?
Have you tried a system recovery back to a date that you know that the sound was ok?
Have you recently installed any third party audio software?
Is the Audio device reported as working correctly in Device Manager?

Hopefully with this information someone will be able to give further guidance...
