Installing new mouse on laptop

I've got a new optical mouse for my laptop and the installation instructions tell me to uninstall my old one first, which is the touchpad, but when I do this Windows tells me to reboot to finish the uninstallation and then installs it again when it boots up. There's no option to disable it so I can't use my new mouse which seems to install but doesn't do anything. Help!

Laptop is Sony VGN-FS115Z with XP, mouse is USB Technika.

Welcome to ClubVAIO

It only applies to mice that you have via USB that will use the same driver.

Just install the driver and run both the touchpad and the mouse together. It works fine.

Thanks. I think it must be a problem with the mouse then. I don't actually install any drivers manually, I just plug it in and Windows makes a beep. Looking in Device Manager the driver shows up for it and says it's working properly but nothing happens when I try to use the mouse. Should the red light under the mouse be on all the time? It tends to turn itself off and wondered if this was normal. Either way, nothing happens when I move or click it. Thanks for your time.

Also, when I go to Control Panel>Mouse the Mouse Properties are for the touchpad. Is this normal?

If it is a laser mouse then it should be on all the time but it might dim.

XP or Vista?

I use XP and keep it updated. The instructions tell me to push a small button on the underside of the mouse and then another button on the USB receiver. I've just done it again now and the receiver lights flicker for a moment (as they should) but the mouse light won't come on. It's made in China and came with batteries (Moon Rabbit!) and I'm wondering if perhaps they're a bit low maybe? I'm clutching at straws now...

Is there a button on the reciever and the mouse?

If there is you need to press them at the same time to get them to use the same channel. If that doesn't work then try some new batteries with the same process and hopefully it'll work.

I think it's the battery compartment causing the problem. I put in new batteries and it worked, for the first time ever, but then the light went out about 20 minutes later and it stopped working again. I've put some folded tissue paper between the batteries and compartment door which I'm hoping will make them more secure.

Anyway, thanks for your time. I think I can take it from here.
