format a floppy

hello

i have a Sony Vaio rx301 with windows xp

could anybody tell me how to format a 3.5 DD disk (720K) :smileyconfused::
When I try to format the disk I only have the choice of 1.44Mb
I changed the bios settings to 3.5 DD but then windows thought my floppy was a 5 1/4 inch drive

Hi,

Sorry to sound pessimistic but I think the days of a 720 floppy are over.

Open a command prompt and type "FORMAT /?"

This will show you how to format a 720KB diskette.

Hi Again!,

Sorry I had forgotten all about DOS although I can still remember avoiding Windows 3.1 for as long as possible.

In fact I tried to format a 3.5 inch disk using FORMAT A: /F:720 in DOS but it would not format perhaps because it had previously been formatted as a 1.44Mb.

I then tried Windows NT, this also had a facility to format a 3.5" disk as 720Kb but it also gave up.

Hope you have some previously unformatted disks as this may be the answer,

regards,

William

Format A: works and detects that the inserted disk is DD
