Solved: the firmware upgrade file mystery - this may be useful to other Mac users

You can't just download the file in the expected way. You have to use the link at the very bottom to save the file to your hard drive. It will then show up as "firmware.upd". Without the .upd suffix, your Bravia won't be able to read the file.
