go to settings and then customer support, keep going until you get to reset factory settings.
no idea how or why!

Good morning. Apps are now working on both TVs now. I did have to do a factory reset on the one I messed about with yesterday. The other I left well alone and seems to work without my need to do anything.

I messaged Sony through their web site, registered the tv, asked for repair.
They have just replied with a long email of how to reset factory settings.

Engineers, many thanks for the fix and thank you community for messages Saw today's updates, went for full factory reset over lunch but only apps showing were Youtube and couple of photo-related icons and bbc red-button appeared but unable to link when presssed. A few minutes later, however, I tried apps again and got the normal, full range of apps but needed to do basic sign-in for Amazon Prime. So all appears to be back to normal working order.
