If you download Handcent SMS texting app, which is a great text app in its own right, one of the 'side effects' of it is that it allows you to select non-android system ringtones.  When you select Ringtone in Sound & Display settings you will get two options Android System and then Select Music.

The other option is to try an app like Zedge which has hundreds of ringtones and wallpapers.  This also gives you a similar option when selecting ringtone, so actually on my phone I have three options to select... Android/Handcent/Zedge.

I do not know whether you can do this (for android 2.1 on mini pro). While listening to a song, press MENU and select Set as ringtone. Have a try.

What you can try is this:

If you have installed ASTRO File Manager from Android market, go to the location where your tones/songs are present, long press on the a tone, a pop-up with 2 options come:

1) Play

2) Set as Ringtone

select the 2nd option. Hope this solves your problem!

The app that i mentioned was ASTRO File manager. Just search 'ASTRO' on the search bar in the market. If you are not getting it, it just means that you are in a region where that app isnt available.
