Somehow I managed to add one new message alert tone (that I created) but how can I add others?
In [Settings > Sounds and Alerts > Message Alert], there is the option of choosing 6 pre-installed alert tones, plus the new one that I created, but no option for adding new ones.
I have created new ringtones via: [File Manager > Music > Ringtones]. Is there a folder with Message Alert tones?
Thanks.

I've just tried it on my W995 and you can actually set different message alerts for each contact: Contacts--Highlight a contact--Options--Edit--click right twice--Message alert--Edit--choose an alert--Save. This will be set specifically for this person.
Once you get to the following Settings > Sounds and Alerts > Message Alert go down to the alert you have already added you should notice that the option for this ringtone alone has replace. Simply select this and find the ringtone you wish to add.
Yes, I know that one new message alert tone can be replaced with one other one,
but I would like to know if more than one new tone can be added (such as can be done with ringtones).
That is, I would like several new tones, not just one plus the six that are pre-installed.
You can simply create a New folder (from the Options in the Music folder in the File manager), name it Message Alert Tones, add all your message alert tones in it and when you choose the Replace option from the message alert list, it will refer back to the File manager where you can choose a message alert tone from this new folder.
Thanks Chris but I does this simply mean that I can only have ONE new message alert tone at any one given time, for all contacts (people) who send me a message?
What I am hoping - by your method of creating a new folder - is that I can assign different alert tones for specific people in the Contacts List,
so that when hearing the tone I know who the message is from without having to pick up the phone to look. There are some messages
that can be ignored and read later, while other people send messages that require a read / reply ASAP. For example, when I am driving my car, or when my W995 not within easy reach, or when I am busy with a project, it is a problem to get the phone only to see it is a notice from my cellphone company informing me of something that is not important.
It seems odd that it is easy to assign different Ringtones for different contacts, while Message Alert Tones require the user to create a new folder of tones and use the Replace method - it is fiddly.
Thanks Chris - all good now.
Great,glad it's sorted out.
