Neo: Which ROM will I get in update?

I have a neo which I bought while in Hong Kong. Recently I moved to India and I think I will hold on to the Neo as I like it.

My question is that in the recent update which has 2.3.3 and the one which I want to upgrade to: will it continue to have the native chinese applications which came loaded? I want to get rid of them and use an English only ROM.

Thanks.

Android 2.3.4 is not available yet for your SI. But the 2.3.3 is available and if you update the HK customization will remain, you wont get any other ROM.

u cannot do that unless ur phone is rooted.

the chinese applications will remain there..

and rooting's not an easy process and even if u do it, u wont know which file to delete

but u can always google these type of things such as rooting..

and if u want then root ur phone..

since u dont have international warranty, u cannot avail warranty in india so u may root,..

Thanks Slimshaddy

Someone (was it Uliwooly?) told me that I can get the another version of the firmware by tapping into a different update file. I can't locate that discussion.

Rooting is somethign which I want to avoid as that will take the chance for me to get it repaired in HK whenever I travel there.

Rooting also seems like a very complicated process which I want to avoid. Am I wrong to assume that a rooted phone will no longer get updated ?

Hasn't someone been through this already? I am surely not the first guy who wants to remove the chinese apps without rooting or at least using the std firmware from SE.

cheers!

This link installs a non-standard ROM. I don't want to void my warranty in doing so.

Any other way to do it ?

When you sourced your phone in HK, did you go through a mobile operator or through a phone retail shop?

If you sourced it from a phone retail shop and not branded to any mobile service provider and unlocked, I believe you can use the HK versions of the firmware listed in the link.

I have not taken it from a mobile operator; bought it from smartone-vodafone store without operator plan which retails handsets without tying to an operator.

When I go in updates it shows that there is a new update available but I am not sure if it will remove those chinese language apps.

Did the Chinese language apps come with the phone or you downloaded the apps?

If you downloaded those apps you can re download then again.

Another thing you could do is to perform a backup using an app called Mybackup before proceeding with the update.

Check if the backup app, backed up the Chinese apps. If it did then you should be able to restore the apps after the update.
