Logging off the internet

Am I logging off the internet properly? As I seem to be using all my data (o2 Text and Web tariff) in about 3 weeks. I'm pressing the menu (middle) key twice to get off the internet. Is that the correct way to do this? I just wondered, as I never used to run out of data so soon with my old phone. Or is it because this is a smart phone? Do they use more data for websites?

also since its a smartphone it uses more data..

there are loads of apps accessing the internet..
