Extract/convert aac from mp4

I have recorded some video on my C903 in mp4 format & need to use just the sound from the video. When I extract the aac soundtrack from the video it is not recognised by any of my media software. How do I resolve this (and what is causing it)? I would prefer to convert to wav format so that I can clean/edit it. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Just before reading that I found a solution: I already have Avidemux installed, so I converted the mp4 to avi, but with wav soundtrack. I extracted that with Virtualdub it works fine! I might try your solution if I have to do this often!
