Hi, I have backed up my contacts to my memory stick in my W995 but now Sony have moved to a microSD card. Will I be able to copy my contacts from the memory stik to the micro SD card. I have too many contacts just to use my sim card. Also, I was playing with an Arc 2day just to find my way around until I can get my hands on a Neo and I noticed that when I inserted a smiley face into a txt, it appeared as punctuation. When I do a smiley on my W995 it appears as a smiley face and this phone is 2 yrs old now. This seems like a massive step backwards to me. Any help/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

this is what you do, on your PC open any folder -> click on tools -> folder options -> View -> make sure Show hidden files, folders and drives is selected, click OK
then mount your SD card, open it, press Ctrl + A to select EVERYTHING then Ctrl + C to copy everything, now transfer everything to either your neo (if its mounted on your computer too) if not create a folder somewhere on your computer, open it -> press Ctrl + V to paste everything, repeat the process from this folder to your new SD card
if you only want to transfer certain folders to your new SD card repeat the steps but narrow it down to only Music or DCIM (pictures)
Hello there, I don't have one of the newer phones I am still running an X10 but I will try and help. Couple of things you could do with the contacts, you could use Sony Ericsson sync to upload them to their 'cloud' from your old phone and then download them on to your new one. That said the system has been down for major maintenance for the last week or so and I have only just got back on here so I don't know whether the sync system is working. So a couple of other suggestions are to use PC Suite to export your contacts to Outlook for example and then import them to Google Mail contacts and then sync any of the new android phones with Google. Another piece of software you can use on your pc is MyPhoneExplorer http://www.fjsoft.at/en/highlight.php and again you can import contacts from Outlook or a .vcf file into that and use it to sync with any of the new Android phones.
On the smiley front, if you use the standard messaging app it does go in as text but I personally use Handcent SMS and that shows up as a picture smiley. It also depends on what operating system you are sending from and what phone is receiving it. For example my husbands iphone always sent me text type smileys until I started using Handcent but my sons Sony Ericsson would send me picture ones.
Hope it helps a bit.
yay we are back
It's not just my contacts I want to copy. I have 1400 photos, 655 music tracks with album art and 70 videos. I would really just like to be able to copy everything from one memory card to the other put in my new phone and for it to work. Has anybody tried this?
As for the smileys, thanks for the info. I just don't understand why SE can manage to show smileys on a 2 yr old phone but on a newer more advanced model they can't. These are the small detals that can effect wether people stay brand loyal or not. When you buy a new phone you want it to have everything your old phone had, plus newer features too.
On the file copying front, does your phone work with the old style PC Suite or if you connect it to your PC does it read the memory card as an external drive? If so you can copy and paste them to your PC drive and then copy them to your new phone. You could also use a card reader if you have one and do the same.
If you use handcent sms app, there is a little lightening bolt by the text input box which allows you to input either standard smilies or you can download the additional Emoji pack of smilies both of which display as pictures not text. I wonder if the standard app is more the android standard than SE's own design, so it may be worth a look at other android devices using the basic application to see if they do the same for comparison.

if you haven't already, you should sync your contacts with Google
oh and there's a way around it, you can install the Backup & Restore app (designed for the X10) on the new generation of Xperias
Make sure you install Backup & Restore App
Thanks everybody.
I did have a play with an SE Arc the other day and I noticed that it has a backup/restore optoin on the contacts screen. I will use this once I have all my contacts on the sd card.
