Hi @maz_da,

I am sorry to hear you're unhappy with your M4.

As apps continue to get larger you will likely experience memory issues on this device. However, here's some tips for managing your memory.

Uninstalling unwanted applications to increase the amount of free internal memory

If the Uninstall option isn't available, the application can't be deleted. Most preinstalled applications can't be deleted as they are integrated in the operating system of your device. All applications that you have downloaded and installed from Google Play can be deleted.

To uninstall an application

  1. From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the All tab.
  4. Scroll to the application that you want to uninstall, then tap it.
  5. Select Uninstall > OK.

Clearing the cache and the data of applications on a regular basis

Applications occupy an increasing amount of storage when they are in use. The occupied storage can be distinguished into:

  • Cache. The cache is data which is stored so that future requests for that data can be served faster. Deleting the cache doesn't delete any user data stored in that applications. The application might need a bit longer to start up the next time. This is not perceivable in most cases.
  • Data. The data of an application is the user-related part of an application. This can be highscores or saved games, account data in an application like Facebook, or personal data like contacts in the Contacts applications. Deleting the data of an application might lead to an irretrievable loss of personal data stored in an application.

To delete the cache or the data of an application

  1. From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the All tab.
  4. Scroll to the application that you want, then tap it.
  5. Select Clear cache to delete the cache of the application, or Clear data to delete all user data (including the cache) stored by the application.

Backing up data to different memory types

Generally, you should not save photos, videos and other personal content solely in the internal memory of your device. If something should happen with the hardware, or if the device is lost or stolen, the data stored in the device internal memory is gone forever.

You do not need to back up or make a copy of applications that you downloaded from Google Play (Play Store). They can normally be downloaded again if you have set up a Google account in your device. You can find the apps which you have purchased under My apps in Google Play, so you will not need to either pay, or search, for them again.

we need the adaptive storage for M4 Aqua. I am happy with all the Sony phones i previously owned but don't make me change my mind and go loyal with other brands

Hi @JeremyB,

Welcome to the community.

The drop in performance we experienced with adaptive storage was significant which is why it was not included with Marshmallow, but I do understand how frustrating it can be. I cannot say if adaptive storage will come in an update or not but we do appreciate your feedback on this.

is there any identified issue if the adaptive storage  was turn on? or the only basis is the drop in performance? if that will be the case i think you should let the consumer decide if they want to use the adaptive storage. with the update i lost some of the apps due to lack of space.

I appreciate the advices offered by CameronT. But they are totally useless. I cannot have whatsapp and facebook installed at the same time. It is frustrating and also humiliating. Seriously, I think about an collective action against Sony on this issue. Who is with me?

I'm Sony handphone fans since Sony Ericsson and i think this Sony Xperia M4 Aqua will be my last smartphone from Sony if they cant do anything about this insufficient memory because day by day some applications take big amount of memory.

On my M4 Aqua i only install Facebook, messenger, Whatsapp and instagram and i only had 0.6GB memory left and it keep warn me that my memory more than 85% nearly full and its really make this device performance slow down and take few second to open and camera really slow sometime error

First and last Sony phone I will ever buy. I am also telling everyone I know not to buy Sony. Three mobile are also to blame for telling me how bad the phone is, so will also be leaving them.

Sony let us decide this phone is rubbish we need an update to the bloatware and we need adaptive storage or be able to return the handset as not fit for purpose
