Just purchased a STR-DN1040 and I had a strange issue which took me an hour or so to resolve so I thought i'd share it as I can imagine other users having the same issue.
When connecting your Macbook to your amp via HDMI, it automatically sets the output to 8ch, 24bit audio. This in turn (even with Multi Channel enabled) doesn't pass allow the amp to create LFE signals for your subwoofer.
Solution...
On your Macbook
1. Go to Applications -> Utilities - > Audio MIDI Setup
2. Click HDMI in the Left Hand Menu
3. On the right hand side you'll see "Format: 48000.00 Hz 8ch - 24bit Integer"
4. Change it to "2ch-16bit Integer"
5. Magic!
