My Sony STR-DN1080 often goes in PROTECTION mode on start up

Hi guys ,
I have a very annoying problem with my 3 1/2 year old Sony STR-DN1080 receiver.
Very often (about every 3rd time) when I turn on the receiver, it goes into protection mode  ('PROTECTOR' flashing in the display) as soon as the relay clicks and then shuts down, which happens about 10  seconds after I have turned it on via the remote.

I can be lucky that it turns on without shutting down the next time, but sometimes it takes 2 more attempts before it starts up without going into PROTECTION mode.
Sometimes a little 'pop' sound is heard in the speakers a split second before PROTECTION mode occurs.

It can happens regardless of whether the receiver is cold or warm.

Sometimes it turns on without going into PROTECTION mode, but without sound in the speakers.

Once it is started up, it works fine as it should , without shutting down - no matter how loud it plays or warm it gets.

So it's ONLY happen when it is powered up .

All speakers connected are 8 Ohm and have been used since it was new. I don't think it's a speaker issue.

The problem began aprox 1/2 year ago - but at that time it only occurs once a week or less. Now it's every day.

Another thing I have noticed (I don't know if it's normal?) is that when it is switched off (on the remote) after it has been running normally, there is a small clicking sound (relay?) about 15 seconds after turning off on the remote.

What do you think is the issue and can I do something myself? I think it's some kind of power failure in the start-up process , which triggers the PROTECTION circuit - maybe a bad soldering somewhere or a component failure?

Hi,

I just want to give an update on this.

The 'startup Protector' issue got worse and worse over time and I often had to switch the receiver on/off 3-4 times before it was up and running. I have also tried to connect it through a power surge plug with no luck.

I therefore considered sending it in for a repair, but first I wanted to give it one last try: a 'Factory Reset'.
And that solved the problem !!!!

It has now been 3 weeks since the reset and it has not failed once since.

Then I wonder what the cause of the problem might have been. Maybe the chip that controls the Protection circuit some how has been in a kind of a 'faulty' state which a reset fixed ?? What do you think?

I'm very happy now that I can keep my reciever and saving a lot of money 🙂

There could be numerous reasons, overloading, short circuit or as you have mentioned dodgy solder connections. I would first think about trying a surge protected plug if you have not already, mains power can be unpredictable especially in older properties.

Unfortunately the issue has come back again  😞

a new Factory reset didn’t resolve the issue this time. Tried several times.

I Think it needs a repair or a replacement.

Yea I think at this point you will need to send it for repair, hope that helps.
