CONVERTING FROM .MOV TO .AVI

I thought this would be a fairly simple process and then write files to DVD and free up space on hard drive!!!! Can any one suggest, ideally a free download app, to do this conversaion, running Vista 64, any ideas much appreciated. Thanks
