CD/DVD Drive Problems (DW-D56A)

Hi,

I have a Sony VAIO with a DW-D56A which has recently stopped working.

I can see the drive in explorer, but when a disc is inserted it doesn't "spin up" and I can't read ANY discs.

If I look at the properties for the drive, it shows disc not inserted.
Everything else shows that the CD drive is functioning correctly and there are no error codes.

I have tried to re-flash the firmware (PFS3) with no luck - However at the end of the flash process it does a disc "Inquiry" and then I can read the disc that I left in the drive. If I eject the disc and re-insert or restart the PC I'm back to square one!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Seems strange that I can read it just after the firmware flash process????

Thanks Andy

I have to now join the club on the DW-D56A drive issues. I got a FS last year August sometime and the drive failed in a month or so. Started off in that it stopped reading DVD's and then CD's. At this point I called Sony and they took the lappie back and replaced the drive. All nice and new but the same drive. Everything has been good since so I thought I had just been unlucky and picked up a dodgy one off drive.
Not So I now feel.

:slight_frown:

The cd player about a month ago just started constantly spinning, never stopping. It still works and that but just never ever stops running when there is a CD in the drive. DVD's appear to be ok. The Vaio Hardware test comes up a Funnel Read Test Fail, the DVD test is all ok though.
Not seen anything directly relating to the above issue's anywhere but get the feeling that this is just the start of another failure. Another week without the lappie when they insist on taking it back to the depot to be fixed Via DHL service centers even though the repair shop is only about 3 miles away from where I work. Oh Well.
If anyone has any idea's before I raise another call please let me know. I've done all the updates I can find but get the same problem.
I think it is slowly destroying my CD's as well as a couple of them now appear to have nice scratch's in them now, I thought that was the case last time but wasn't sure. Now though a CD that has only ever been in this CD drive has scratches. The only other place it has ever been is in the original case.
Wonder if Sony will replace the discs as well !!!

Another member of the DW-D56 drive club!

My drive, fitted to my A497XP, is very temprimental. When I create an image of a DVD, it keep failing. Other drives create an image of the same disc just fine!

It is under a year old, and they want me to restore it back, then try. If I still have problems they will take it away.....!

Do you think they will just replace the drive with another?

Should I/can I insist on a different drive?

Any advice about what to do would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Tony.

I would appreciate any details of the new drive, as I am in the same position, not wanting the DA56A or the problematic replacement!!

Please let me know how you got/get on.

Thanks very much!
