Hi pondey,
welcome to Club VAIO..
If you're looking for a free alternative have you considered AVG, use the following link to find out more:AVG Antivirus
Ive had a look at avg before and last time i used it, it gave me viruses so ive kinda tended to stay away from it. would you recommend norton as i have had a good offer on it?
Thanks
Hi pondey,
as you are considering paying for a product then you want to have a look at these reviews..
Symantec Norton Internet Security 2008
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009

I'm using the product from G-Data and are quite satisfied with it.

G Data AntiVirus 2008
Hello pondey.
Your post just caught my eyes cause I tried a lot of anti-virus/internet security solutions, so I thought I could be helpful!
First it depends on how you see your protection. If you're a power user or an occasional one. If you are searching for an antivirus or an all-in-one solution… What kind of machine you’re working on. And so on.
For a power user I'd definitely suggest NOD32, a very powerful antivirus, yet not intrusive at all, and with the minimal effect on your computer, but not for everyday users. If the boot speed of your computer doesn't matter to you, I'd suggest the well earned best reputation on the market [but huge], the Kaspersky IS. Norton is not a product that I would recommend though, cause I've been using it for four years in total and it tends to become so intrusive that you feel you've lost the control over your computer... Mcafee is not a product that I know well, apart from its mainstream name and operation like norton, but the people who are using it in general are not that satified, again so intrusive and too much links towards other mcafee products... Bitdefender seems to be a good solution, as well as Panda, F Secure, PC Cillin, etc. But the one I'd definitely recommend is the german G Data, that is, considering the lowest impact on performances of your computer, eventhough excellent detection with its two independant scanners and yet very simple to use. I have this solution on all my computers since over 2 years, and it works like a charm the same on a FZ21Z.
I hope this helped a little bit!
Let me know what you think!
Cheers
William
Having tried many security products, I have to concur that Eset NOD32 is among the best.
The Smart Security Suite is also very effective while maintaining a small footprint, the firewall being so much easier to configure and at least as effective as Vista's own.
I have never had a false-positive scare from the AV and it promptly arrested a couple of nasties which jumped out of .exe files while I was being careless.
I've heard Norton is better than it used to be at detection and removal, but still heavy on resources.
I'm definitely going to have a look at G Data, German software is really good lately.
Three letters, AVG
Excellent piece of software, make sure you turn off LinkScanner though, and get it directly from grisoft.com.
