how do i change the update settings so i only connect to inetrnet and get charged when needed?

I'd suggest disabling MMS & Data. This can be done by following these steps:

Go to Settings > Wireless Controls > Untick MMS & Data.

When this is unticked, your handset cannot connect to the Internet via your network operator. If you wish to connect at any point, simply tick the box for MMS & Data again.

thanks for the reply, my problem is that as soon as I switch the phone on it automatically searches for updates by connecting to internet and I have found this is costing me money needlessly. I have been told that the phone must have been setup to autoconnect to search for updates but there should be an option to select "connect only when needed" but not sure where to look to get this option. Dont want to totally disable MMS & data if there is another option. Regards:smileyhappy:

This would depend on what updates the phone is searching for. If it is searching for phone software updates, you can disable this by doing the following:

Settings > About phone > Software Update > Untick Auto Search
