Xperia M5 camera crash in facial recognition

I've been trying the Facial Recognition feature available in the phone, since 2015, also as "it's the Buzz lately."

But I realised that there is a problem with the operation of the feature.

After setting up a Face, it doesn't recognise in the dark.

Bigger problem is, when the phone is locked, it simply does not work.

The little icon in the middle bottom of the lock screen keeps fluctuating. And user face is not detected.

After manually unlocking the phone when I tried to open the Camera App, it'd say "Error: App is currently in use by other application, close the app and try again."

And it'll never work till the phone is Restarted. Basically every time if I have to unlock, I have to restart my phone, which takes longer than a super computer.

In fairness I'd like a solution from you guys, rather an update, cause this is purely a software malfunction. Do not ask me to shut down and use it as it was.

So here I am Sony, asking for help, kindly provide a solution and not the drill to, clean cache, disable the app, force shut and restart, if that fails then advising me to submit my phone to the service centre!

@Keetarp11 look, here the issue is for sure "software" and not "hardware". You may have an app using the camera or trying to use it and crashing. Try 1st of all to disable Ok Google recognition, it's known that it may provoke issues with cameras also, try to restart the phone in safe mode and check if the camera crashes again... if it does not.. there you go, the problem is software.

You could back up all your data and perform a software repair using Xperia Companion. That will fix the issue for sure but then pay attention to the app you reinstall or re-enable, one of them is provoking your problem.

@YoGem, Genius, I'd like to answer you for every single line but that'll take ages, please try to understand the problem as I described. ( phone Feature means - inbuilt. No third party)

*look, here the issue is for sure "software" and not "hardware".

--- I guessed that was not difficult to guess.. I did mention that it's SOFTWARE ISSUE!

*You may have an app using the camera or trying to use it and crashing. --- It's an inbuilt feature, I DO NOT have any third party app for that.

*try to restart the phone in safe mode and check if the camera crashes again... if it does not.. there you go, the problem is software.

--- Do you mean to say I should use the phone in safe mode for the rest of its life, cause that's the mode where it's not giving problems? And I know it's a SOFTWARE ISSUE! Thanks for assuring me.

*You could back up all your data and perform a software repair using Xperia Companion. That will fix the issue for sure but then pay attention to the app you reinstall or re-enable, one of them is provoking your problem.

--- Did this part too, but sorry to say it didn't change anything. Not even a bit. The problem still persists. Please note - I'm not using any third party app,  it's still the same. It still crashes,  doesn't let you use camera, I'm still getting the random error about Camera being in use by other application.

Nothing changed in the working of the feature.

Please read the first post carefully, the solution would be a Software update FROM SONY but nobody else..!!

@Ptkptkptk thank you for the detailed reply. It's for sure a software issue, could you please post here the model number and customization ID? You can find these in Settings, About, Diagnostic, Facts.

My pleasure.

Model is E5663.

Customisation -

1298-2221 R5b

Current Software Version-

30.2.B.1.21

(Xperia M5 Dual, the same one which has a lot of battery life issues, charging issues, Random Shut Down issues, Not getting Turned ON without a power source after the Shut Down Issues, The Service Center Has no resolution to whatsoever Issues persists. As they say it's a manufacturing Defect and can't Help.) Since You know by the track record of the Model, it clearly didn't do that well in the market. Why didn't anyone care to replace them? Customers paid to get Something, a Device, fully functional! Not to feel that it's a waste of money when they look at their phones.

That's what I get for being a Loyal customer for 9 years, changing models but all within Sony?

The same in my one. Finally I disabled the facial unlock, for the continous locking the front camera.

It's a very buggy phone 😞
