Sony KD-55XE9305 and Yamaha RX-V481 Receiver - turns itself on

Hello,

I use Bravia sync to connect my Sony KD-55XE9305 to my Yamaha RX-V481 receiver. There's an Xbox, VirginMedia PVR, CD player and Alexa connected to the amp and then the output of the amp is connected to the TV. ARC is on. Bravia link is on. It's all controlled by a Harmony Elite remote.

It all works perfectly except for one thing... the TV regularly switches the amp on by itself. As if it's sending the 'on' signal to the amp. This happens every couple of hours, but not on a regular schedule. The amp will simply switch on, and be on the ARC input. It's most annoying if I'm using the amp (without the TV) to listen to music via Spotify or on CD and suddenly it'll switch to the Sony ARC input on the amp.

I've called Sony and they say they won't help because it's not a Sony amp. I get that, but the problem is that the Sony TV seems to be sending out commands when it shouldn't be, regardless of the make of the amp. I've tried disabling Bravia sync and doing everything via the Harmony remote, but then the TV doesn't connect to the amp.

Anyone have this experience? Any fix?

Thanks.

Hi matlumb,

So your KD-55XE9305 TV keeps randomly connecting to your Yamaha RX-V481?

Please have a browse of this first, this second and this third YouTube tutorial, to see if it helps, and do keep us updated.

Thanks,

Thanks for the links - but Bravia Sync itself is working fine. The problem is that the TV turns the amp on without any intervention from me. The TV will be off, and at random times the amp will turn on and switch to the ARC input. If I'm using the amp to listen to music, it'll sometimes just switch to the ARC input.

I think the TV is sending 'ON' signals when it shouldn't.

Good news - finally Sony has accepted it's a problem as it's been fixed in the latest firmware update.

Turns out it's not fixed. The TV continues to switch the Amp on. If I turn off 'HDMI Control' on the amp or TV, it's fine. If the TV is on, it's fine. It happens when the TV is off - it regularly sends an ON command. Sony haven't responded to my last email request. Great support.

Hi Matlumb,

That's very strange. Could you try simplifying the connection? I mean connect only the TV and the amp and disconnect all other devices connected to know what's causing this.

Cheers,

TBH I've tried *everything* and it's simply down to this:

- TV and Amp off, amp is regularly switched on and set to the ARC input (i.e. the TV)

- TV off and Amp on, amp is regularly switched to the ARC input (i.e. the TV)

- TV on, no problems

If I turn off HDMI control on either the TV or the Amp, the problem vanishes... but then I can't get any audio from the TV to the Amp (and using an optical cable is not an option).

I am sure the TV is sending some sort of 'hello' HDMI command when it's switched off.

Hi there,

Does the TV wake any other devices connected via HDMI on? Could you try connecting another device that supports control for HDMI to the TV and check if it will wake up the same way?

Thanks Win_88.

It's just the amp, as that's got the ARC connection from the TV. My Xbox and VirginMedia box are connected to the amp as inputs, so the amp does the switching back to the TV. I don't have any other devices to try unfortunately.

Hi Matlumb

In this case, if you've already made sure the TV is running the latest software version and you've tried a factory reset with the same result. I'd consider contacting Yamaha to check if there's something they can advise with.
