Humming noise coming from MHC M80D unit
Please I just bought a new sony MHC M80D Two weeks ago, and yesterday the control unit started making a humming noise like there is a fan inside it. The noise is loud enough to be heard when the system is working, like its loud enough to be part of the sound coming from the speakers. Please What is wrong with it? Should I return it or there is something I'm missing?
Please I really need a Sony technician help me here ASAP, as this is very disturbing.

Please one more thing: I cannot get on the Community cos I was asked to
select my country and my country is not on the list of countries.
I don't get why Sony does not mind selling to us in Nigeria but minds
talking with us and helping us with the use of their products? If they
don't like us why sell to us in the first place?
Cheers.

Hi Xtterix,
Welcome to our small community!
I wonder if the system is placed in a dusty place? Does the noise you hear seem to be steady or does it fluctuate? If you start the main unit with no speakers connected or content playing, does the noise still occur?

1. The place is not dusty.
2. Yes, the noise fluctuates.
3. Yes, I do hear it when the system just comes up and nothing yet playing
- that's when it is the clearest.
I had a peep into the panel through the air vent at the back, and I noticed
a fan spinning at the front of the unit. That's what's responsible for the
whizzing noise. My problem is: why design a fan to be so noisy. Such that
at volume level of 9 or even 10, I can still hear it whenever it starts. I
think thats some really bad User Experience design.
Thanks for you response though. I appreciate it.
Cheers.

Hi again,
I think how fast (and therefore how loud) the fan spins depends on the temperature of the internal components which is directly proportional to the surrounding (ambient) temperature. So the question here is how hot does the room get? If it gets warm then there's no way around such a noise.

Hi Win_88
The room is not hot. In fact, this was happening in the cold harmattan season when humans have to bath with hot water or catch a cold.
Besides, why should temperature be hot when one just turns on the unit in the morning after it has stayed off for the entire night? The hottest temperature in my house is room temperature which is just about coming around now - and interestingly the noise is not that frequent. So I frankly don't think my ambient temperature is the problem here.

Hi Xtterix,
If you think your unit is faulty, I'd recommend contacting your local Sony support team for details on how to get it inspected.
