I have downloaded a few HDR demos to a USB stick and have no trouble playing them. However I cannot see any indication that the TV knows it is playing a HDR demo. If I go Action Menu -> Picture -> it simply says Picture mode Standard. Where should I be seeing the HDR indication? Exact steps may help me.

Sorry, I just tried another Sony HDR Demo and HDR did appear top right on Action Menu -> Picture. Apps (Video) HDR.
