No sound or LED notifications for email

Since marshmallow, I have had to stop using K9 mail as emails in my inbox kept disappearing.
I am now using the on board email app which seems fine except for one thing.
I have set notification sounds and led light to flash when emails arrive, but there is no sound or led notification.
Any suggestions what the problem might be?

Is it only for the Email app that you don't receive sound or LED notification from, or do you experience this for other apps as well?

K-9 was my favorite email client prior to switching from hosted emails to Google Apps, one of my major complaints with the dev is that the icon is terrible and that at each software update always something is broken, one of them were the notification settings.

K9 is now a community development project, you could send them your bug report, they may recognize it as a known bug on marshmallow, but you could also check if you have notifications disabled for that specific app or if it need some permissions that are yet to be granted.
