Sound from my laptop via HDMI is distorted and out of sycn

I connected my MacBook Pro to my Sony KE-48A9 Android Old TV with an HDMI cable, to watch a streamed production. I selected the Sony in the audio system settings, but the sound was horribly distorted and out of sync by 2 or 3 seconds. I've tried a different cable and a different HDMI input - no better. Computer sound was fine.

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Hi @Ian_M_L

Have you ruled out a problem with the Mac, by connecting another device on the HDMI lead and it is also distorted and out of sync? Just temporary swap it with your Blu-ray player or other handy device.
