Programme Recording ? TV has to be on & can you record halfway through?

So setup everything yesterday and tried a couple things

record a programme that had already started - Resulted in a fail, saying timeshift or programme had already started (funny as timeshift isnt supported on this set anyway)

Record a program when the TV is on standby - Resulted in a failure to detect storage fail.

is this normal?
